Welcome to the AMM

To all our staff, students, alumni and visitors: wamkelekile, karibu, welkom and bienvenue! Feel free to make AMM your destination of choice again this year!

We welcome you into the New Year and into the excitement that 2010 brings. You can expect a lot from us, apart from our academic programmes the 2nd World Journalism Education Congress will set foot in Grahamstown 5-7 July together with Highway Africa in that time. This will be right after a 15 day National Arts Festival, not even to mention the Soccer World Cup activities.

We invite all students, alumni, parents, colleagues and friends to join us in this busy year!

PGDIP NEWBIES

Aspirant journalists attended their orientation programme Friday morning, 5 February at the AMM. The Post Graduate in Journalism and Media Studies (PGDip) newbies from all over the country and further afield embark on their year-long academic journey on 8 February.

NEW IN TOWN


The nine fulltime MA students for 2010 are all non-South African Africans who approached this New Year with enthusiasm. They are ready to read about, interrogate and explore the various areas of Journalism & Media Studies. The group was officially welcomed with our traditional cocktail evening on 29 January.

TAKE A LITTLE

Senior students who will be 1st year tutors gave us their best tutor smile at their tea, on Friday morning February 5th. These 17 tutors will guide their groups through 2010.

2010 is going to be a big year for SA and for JMS with hosting the WJEC (read more in QUOTE 2nd edition).

Let us make it an even bigger year for 20 JMS first year students!

We aim to raise R50.000 in alumni scholarships, which Telkom would double, through a scholarship challenge!!

Set up a new scholarship to the value of R5000 as an individual alumnus or a group of alumni!

Quote is the official vibrant and dynamic JMS publication that is produced by the staff and students of the School of Journalism and Media Studies.

It is released twice yearly and reports on the ins and outs of the happenings in and around the Africa Media Matrix.

Anthea Garman, our senior writing and editing lecturer recently commented: "It's such a bright in your face up and at em publication that I'm proud to be associated with it."

Viva Vulindlela!

Vulindlela is back to open the way into the Africa Media Matrix, the School of Journalism and Media Studies and the future for a select group of students. It is with great pride and excitement that we announce the return of the Summer School in 2010. A Game Apart

Alumnus Neal Collins is a proud Rhodes University BJourn graduate who continues to rekindle ties with his Alma Mater in making mention of it in his journalism.

As sport journalist, currently resident in London, he is writing a novel to be published before the World Cup, billed "the book you must read before South Africa 2010".

The book, entitled 'A Game Apart', is "the real story behind the World Cup in South Africa, 2010."

Martin ready to switch on our TV students

JMS4 TV is set to get a double-dose of international experience. While lecturer Paul Hills is in the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship gaining international experiences, his leave replacement for this semester is Martin Phillips, a highly-regarded US television producer with a passion for teaching.

Phillips, who was born in Cape Town but has lived in the US since 1964, has a Masters of Science in Journalism and a Masters of International Affairs from Columbia University in New York.
