I THINK WHAT I AM”: HERITAGE, IDENTITY AND SOCIAL COHESION

              

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

  

The Southern African Folklore Society invites you to its International Conference and Annual General Meeting hosted by Rhodes University in 2014.  We hope this year's theme (“I think what I am”: Heritage, Identity and Social Cohesion) will attract scholars from a variety of disciplines and challenge conventions, by highlighting the dynamic nature of culture and the links between folklore and all realms of heritage, identity and knowledge, including Science and Technology.

 

Abstracts are invited on the topics linked with the conference theme or the following sub-themes:

 

  • The role of Technology in Preserving, Restoring and Dissemination Indigenous Knowledge
  • Social Media as part of Reclaiming Language and Identity
  • Innovation and Oral Literature Forms
  • The Role of Oral Literature in Guarding against Gender Abuse
  • Problematising Orality and its role in a changing Global Reality
  • Indigenous Knowledge in Contemporary Society
  • Orality and Urban Youth Culture 
  • Orality and Ethnomusicology 
  • Orality and Education
  • Orality and Health
  • Orality, Power and Politics
  • Orality and Religion

 

 

 

PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS

 

Presentations will be 20 minutes in length plus 10 minutes for discussion.                                                                                

 

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

 

Abstracts which are 150-200 words in length should be submitted by email as an MSWord file with the following information:

Abstracts must be in English, but authors are warmly encouraged to accompany them with a translation in one or more African languages.

DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

 

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 31 March 2014. Abstracts will be reviewedanonymously and notification of acceptance will be sent by the 15 May 2014. Abstracts can be e-mailed, faxed or posted to the Chairperson of the organising committee as indicated below:
