A THIRST TO "TASTE THE ADVENTURE"
MAIN EVENTS AND SIDE EVENTS
As in previous years, there will once again be two events in 2009. These will comprise the Main and Side Events. The Main Event has been increased to 48 teams of 5 individuals in each team. The Side Event will be for all spectators, societies, supporting teams and others who were unable to participate in the main event and will be a lot more relaxed and entertaining as prizes will also be given.
COMMUNITY UPLIFTMENT
The AWA, assisted by the CSD, with the support of the GIVE 5 campaigne and Allan Webb Hall identified the Sun City Pre-School as the primary beneficiary of this year's event.
MAIN EVENT RULES
How to Enter a Team!
The window period for applying to enter teams into the main events fun challenge will be open starting from the 17th August at 08h00 ending on the 31st August 2008 at 16h00.
What is this application?
- These applications are taken on a first come first serve basis to enter. Write in a short motivation of what you know about the AWA and how you understand its contribution to society and what your team is expecting to gain from AWA Fun Challenge. State the composition of your team: whom its made up of and where you all are staying. Email your written application to awa@ru.ac.za
- Teams must comprise a 3:2 ratio of ?:? or ?:? (same for side event)
- Teams must appoint a captain who will attend the Captains’ Meeting at 7pm on Tuesday 15th September 2008. If you miss the meeting, your place will be taken by another team and your entrance fee will be donated to charity. (more details later in pamphlet)
- Teams will be sent off in a group of eight teams but competing in pairs at stipulated time intervals
- Teams must complete five tasks in a stipulated sequence
- Each task has a set time for completion - teams that do not complete a task in the required time must move on to the next task or incur a points penalty
- Teams will only find out what their five tasks are when they start and until such time each team will be confined in three groups of eight
- There will be swimming involved (short distance – c. 50-75m)
- Each team must pay an entrance fee of R200 – this will help cover the subsidised costs for the event and goodies to be supplied to the participating teams. (Payments need to be made no later than 4pm on Tuesday 1st of September 2009).
- Failure to pay the entrance fee on time will result in your team’s place being given to another team on the waiting list
- It is very important that you have your team members available for the prize giving ceremony as their absence will result in your team keeping the position but forfeiting the prize as it will automically be handed over to the team next inline to your position.
- Each team is required to have a cheering team of at least 5 people with at least two members of the opposite sex as this crowd team can be able to take part in side events.
SAFETY
Fully trained first aid personnel will be on-site at all times during the event. Life guards will also be present to help ensure safety any possible swimming component of the Adventure.
PRIZES AND OTHER GOODIES
There will be many exciting prizes, including but not limited to gift hampers, clothing and gift vouchers.
SPECTATORS
This year's event is specifically designed for the spectator and we have moved the venue closer to campus to facilitate easy access. All the tasks will be centred in and around the Grahamstown Botanical Gardens, just off Lucas Avenue, near Eden Grove. It will be as exciting for spectators to watch and support the teams, as it will to take part. Spectators are encouraged to enter the spirit of the AWA and organise themselves to take part in the side events or to just sit, relax and enjoy the show. Bring along a blanket to sit on, as well as a picnic and lots of sunscreen. There will be Djs from RMR massaging you with some music, community market stores including the Old Goal Farmers vegetable market stores, Art and craft stores, Nandos, jumping castles, donkey cart rides and other snack stalls selling refreshments to keep you fed and entertained throughout the day.
