Give5 2012
Rhodents raising money for Rhodents!
The Annual Fund Pocket Money fund assists financially needy students, who despite receiving financial aid, have no money left after paying tuition fees and living expenses for necessities such as toiletries . The fund supplies students with R130 pocket money per month for 10 months of the year. Originally started by Dean of Students Dr Vivian de Klerk, the pocket money fund was mainly supported by Staff and at the beginning of the year there were only 160 students that the fund was able to help.
Our current students took Give5 and the cause to heart. Many of our students were not aware that there were Rhodents amongst them that were struggling financially. To buy a coke, extra stationery, to join fellow students for a braai or a drink at the "local watering hole" is taken for granted and the Give5 fundraising project alerted many students to the fact that some of their friends, res mates or partners in their study groups did not have extra money to buy toiletries, never mind spending money on the pleasant activities above.
Rhodents to the Rescue! Every single Hall and Residence, including our enthusiastic Oppidans took part in each of the two collection weeks that we held this year. Over R44 000 00 was raised by fellow students asking for R5 from fellow students - our staff and alumni participated and our local businesses were approached to sponsor prizes to increase competition and create excitement on campus.

The Winners:
Intense competition between the Residences and Halls started in the March Campaign. Founders Hall gleefullly won the Give5 Trophy and the Helen Joseph Residence won the Flat Screen TV sponsored by Videotronic. R28 833.03 was raised in March.
The August/September collection week collided with increased academic commitments and fund raising for the Hall Balls, however it did not stop Courtenay- Latimer winning the shield away from Founders and Joe Slovo Residence winning the flat screen TV sponsored by Pick n Pay. R15 300.90 was raised bringing the total to R44 133.93!
