Frank Brooks (1949)
At Rhodes Frank Brooks, when a Physics research student acting as lab demonstrator, used to go out of his way to aid us undergrads in the sometimes testing Physics lab classes. This was typical of his outgoing friendly personality. Then when I was a shivering research student mid last century in winter at Manchester, he cheered me immensely by arranging a visit to Harwell where he worked; the drives in his MG around that pleasant area were hugely enjoyable, and the latest nuclear news intriguing and valuable. Only in the 1990s did we meet again in Cape Town, where he was again hospitality itself. He was a major force in UCT's astronomy work. He will be much missed by all who knew him, and our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Kathleen.
