Andrew Stuart McEwan (1984)
Obituary - Sent in by his wife Karen
Andrew Stuart McEwan, aka Mac, aka Aindriú Stiúbhart MacEoghainn na h Oitrich was born on the 6th of May 1965 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and passed away on the 27th of January 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa at the age of 43. He was adopted by Nora and the late Thomas McEwan and attended Milton Junior School and Gifford High School in Bulawayo
After high school, he left Zimbabwe to attend Rhodes University where he graduated with a BSC in Computer Science and Psychology. He went on to complete his MCom in IT at Wits University in 1997.
In his 20 year working career, Andrew worked for a number of organisations starting at Infogold in 1988, then Siemens, Standard bank, Total, Mike Bergen & Associates, ABSA and then a 10 year stint at Iscor, later Kumba and more recently Exxaro Resources where he retired from on 31 December 2008 as CIO.
Andrew and Karen were married on the 31st of January 1990 and Andrew acquired a stepson, Richard McEwan.
One of Andrew’s greatest strengths was the ability to see the potential in others. He was passionate about people and he had this desire to assist those who wanted to grow and achieve their potential and be the best they could be. His door was always open.
His passion for art, music, photography, reading, writing and people lead him to discover new information on all these subjects. He also developed a passion for travel and both Scotland and France held a special place in his heart.
As far as legacy is concerned he already had this covered – Inspirational leader, loving Husband, great Dad and caring friend.
More than anything we will miss Andrew for his wicked sense of humour and off the wall commentary. But most of all, Andrew had the ability to laugh at himself an action that got rid of the frown that dominated his face because he was always so deep in thought. He will be sorely missed by all of his family, friends and co-workers.
