Cathleen Lieda (Eckard) Bell
BELL, Cathleen Lieda (Eckard) - retired professor of German and Russian,
loved teaching and continued to miss it and her students until her last
days. Born in Matatiele in South Africa, Lieda with her husband Peter and
their son Kim and daughter Jane Robin emigrated to Newfoundland in 1963
because of their profound objections to apartheid, the policy that stained
South Africa at that time. Lieda had a full and rich life beyond teaching,
with tennis and squash, with drama and Amnesty International, and with many
friends and family who loved her dearly and miss her terribly. She had long
declared however that, after strokes and heart troubles, and although
thankful for her rich life, she was ready to leave. As her family put it,
Lieda had long been standing on the shoulder of the road to heaven, trying
to catch a ride. Days after another stroke, Lieda caught her ride, and on
Saturday, November 21st, 2009 peacefully embarked on her next adventure.
Memorial service at 2:00 p.m.
December 28th at St. Thomas' Church, Military Road. In lieu of flowers, we
