Jean King (Young 1935)
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Jean Loban King (nee Young) who passed away in her 91st year on 30 January 2009 after a short illness.
Jean maintained contact with a number of her contemporaries throughout her life and took a keen interest in Rhodes University activities attending a number Old Rhodians reunions in the UK. Jean was raised in Port Elizabeth and attended the Collegiate High school for Girls were she was awarded the municipality gold medal for achievement.
Following this success Jean attended Rhodes University were she graduated in 1938 with a BA degree and returned to the Collegiate High school to teach history and Latin.
Jean took a sabbatical from her teaching post travelling to the UK in 1949. In the same year she resigned her position taking permanent residence in the UK, marrying Alan King in 1951.
Jean is survived by her sister Mary Gooseman whom has just celebrated her 93rd birthday and her two sons Roger and John. Mary still resides at the family home in Schoenmakerskop, Port Elizabeth. Jean’s sons, together with their wives, (both of whom are named Elizabeth) and six grandchildren all reside in the UK.
Despite struggling with arthritis for many years, Jean’s strength of character enabled her to overcame her physical disabilities, her keen mind and prestigious memory remained with her to the end. She was an inspiration to her family and all who new her.
