Prof Ernest George Prout
Professor Ernest G. Prout passed away at his home in Franschoek on 19 May 2009 at the age of 87. The late Professor Prout was a graduate of the former University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, where he obtained his PhD in 1945 for work under Dr F.C. Tompkins. After lecturing at the Cape Technical College for five years, he was awarded a research fellowship at Imperial College, London, to work with Sir Alfred Egerton, FRS. Two years of lecturing at the University of Cape Town was followed by two years at the Atomic Research Establishment at Harwell in the UK. He was appointed as Senior Lecturer at Rhodes University in 1956 and was promoted to Professor of Physical Chemistry in 1962 after the retirement of Professor W.F. Barker. He moved to the University of Cape Town in 1966, was awarded a DSc in 1974 and retired in 1985.
During his retirement he spent some years in Grahamstown to be nearer his family, but later returned to the Western Cape.
