Andrew Buckland (1973)
CAPE Town theatregoers are in for a treat with Andrew Buckland performing a season of three plays, Ugly Nco Noo, Between the Teeth and Mistero Buffo at the Baxter Theatre running until May 22.
These shows, the first two written by Buckland and the latter by Dario Fo, are a challenging prospect best explained by the umbrella title of the season: One Man, Three Shows, 100 Characters.
This season celebrates Buckland's contribution to South African theatre since 1988.
He employs a combination of visual comedy, political satire, clowning, physical theatre and mime, which has earned respect both locally and abroad.
Buckland has recently wrapped up a year of performing with Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas. When he got back, he found that he had a gap between his teaching commitments at Rhodes University and his performances at the National Arts Festival in June. He contacted Baxter director Lara Foot and expressed interest in performing this two-week season.
The Ugly Noo Noo, first performed in 1988, is a fantastical epic set around the mythology of the fearsome Parktown Prawn.
Between the Teeth, first performed in 1991, is a satirical look at the transformative power of words and semantics.
Mistero Buffo is a controversial, irreverent riposte to the mystery plays of medieval times. All three pieces are directed by his wife, Janet (1975) . Once the season is over, Buckland will be gearing up for the National Arts Festival, where he'll be working with Ubom Theatre Company and star in Breed, directed by Brink Scholtz (1999).
All performances are at 8:15pm.The Ugly Noo Noo on May 14,15,19 and 20; Between the Teeth on May 11,21 and 22 and Mistero Buffoon on May 12,13,17 and 18. Tickets: R70-R130. Booking: Computicket on 083 915 8000.
