Silvana Barbali
Silvana Barbali, a Junior Lecturer in the department, has an MA (Rhodes). Her research focused on Senegalese migrants in Port Elizabeth and how they cope with and respond to xenophobia. Her research also examined the role Islam (Sufi’ism) plays in their migration experiences. She joined the anthropology department in 2009.
Her teaching areas include urban anthropology, diaspora and transnationalism with an emphasis on Senegal as a case study. She is currently undertaking PhD research on issues of professional development of academics as teachers. Silvana can be contacted at s.barbali@ru.ac.za
