About
Biotechnology at Rhodes University is offered at the postgraduate level including Honours, Masters and PhD. At the undergraduate level Biotechnology modules are taught within the Biochemistry and Microbiology undergraduate programme.
Biotechnology is a broad field of study encompassing the application and study of living organisms to improve or develop new products and processes. It is a fast developing and multi-disciplinary field which is primarily focused around the application of biochemistry and microbiology but also incorporating other disciplines and fields of study such as nanotechnology, chemistry, physics, botany, ichthyology, entomology and zoology. Geared as biotechnology is towards product development and commercialisation, awareness of issues around patenting, entrepreneurship and process technology. Through the newly established School of Biotechnology research & training in biotechnology at Rhodes University follows an integrated approach permitting a rich and varied programme of research and training.
Honours in Biotechnology
The one year Honours Biotechnology Programme comprises coursework, research and enrichment modules.

- Biosensors
- Medical biotechnology
- Protein Engineering
- Alternative energy - fuel cells
- Bioremediation
Research
- Students follow an eight month individual course of research selected from projects offered at the beginning of the year of study.
Enrichment
- A dynamic enrichment programme which is not examined, allows Honours, MSc and PhD students the opportunity for exposure and enrichment in areas including new technology, industrial applications, entrepreneurship, intellectual property as well as the societal impact of science through seminars, guest speakers, journal clubs and on-site visits.
Masters and PhD studies
MSc and PhD studies are conducted under the guidance of a supervisor or mentor and normally follow a two year course of research in the case of MSc and three years for PhD studies. Students join the research group of the supervisor and become an important part of the research culture of the department. Prospective MSc and PhD students are encouraged to visit the individual staff pages to become familiar with the research programmes in the department.
