The Career Centre in conjunction with the Dean of Students hopes to launch the following programme in 2013 - the Dean of Student's Programme for Exceptional Involvement in Student Life
Signing up and participating in this programme allows you the opportunity to commit to your own personal and professional development as a result of the co-curricular activities that you are involved in at university. Only University recognised and specific, listed co-curricular activities in the programme will be permissible to count towards this certificate and each registered activity will have a maximum point value which will be scored and evaluated at the end of each academic year and will contribute to the successful completion of the proposed programme.
This programme adds value to your career development as you are able to provide proof of transferable skills such as accountability, appreciation of diversity, ability to work either independently or within a team and much more. These are important qualities that increase your employment prospects and are attributes that potential employers are seeking in the workplace.
Recognised extra-curricular activities include SRC positions, Residence leadership positions, Rhodes Sport and school coaching and sporting positions, community engagement activities, academic positions such as a class rep or tutor and additional involvements such as part time employment at Rhodes University during term time. These activities will be specified in the programme guidelines upon registration and you will have to provide proof of involvement and a record of adequate performance to receive a certain value in points to indicate completion of the programme. You will be required to obtain 15 points from at least 3 different categories within the time you are registered as a student at Rhodes.
In addition to adequate performance in your particular registered activities, you will be required to record and reflect on the roles and responsibilities of these activities and provide evidence of professional and personal growth by submitting a portfolio at the end of each academic year. The Career Centre will keep a record of your progress and will have the responsibility of evaluating your performance within the programme. You will be able to attend various workshops on offer throughout the year that will assist you in this reflection and personal development. A certificate will be awarded at the end of the year if the required points have been attained. This opportunity will be offered on a trial basis from 2013– and evaluated for its contribution annually.
So – if this programme inspires you and motivates you to strategize and put a plan of action into place to develop yourself personally and professionally – look out for the introduction of this opportunity.
