Dr Saleem Badat |
| As CEO of the Council on Higher Education, Dr Saleem Badat was responsible for much of the policy related to the transformation of South African higher education following the 1994 democratic election – work which earned him an honorary doctorate from the University of the Free State. In 2008, his work in higher education policy also earned him an honorary doctorate from the University of York. In 2006, he was appointed as Vice Chancellor of Rhodes University. In spite of the demands of this senior position, Dr Badat still has a keen interest in higher education as a field of academic study. |  Dr Saleem Badat

Professor Chrissie Boughey |
| Professor Chrissie Boughey is Director of CHERTL and Dean of Teaching and Learning at Rhodes University. She has a special interest in social inclusion in relation to higher education and on the way dominant understandings of teaching and learning serve to privilege some and exclude others. To date she has supervised nine doctoral theses to successful conclusion on a wide range of topics related to higher education. |  Prof Chrissie Boughe

Professor Paul Maylam |
| Professor Paul Maylam is Head of the Department of History at Rhodes University. For some years now, he has worked in the field of South African urban history with a focus in apartheid. He has a special interest in higher education and a wealth of experience of supervision at postgraduate level. |  Prof Paul Maylam

Dr Lynn Quinn |
| Dr Lynn Quinn has a specialist interest in the development of academic staff as professional educators and, thus, in teaching and learning in higher education more generally. Her own research work is based in Social Realism. At Rhodes she has been closely involved in the Mellon Accelerated Programme for Academic Staff and thus has a wide experience of supporting doctoral candidates. |  Dr Lynn Quinn

Professor Jen Snowball |
| Professor Jen Snowball brings a background in Economics and the teaching of Economics to her study of higher education. She has a special interest in assessment, in the teaching of large classes and in the use of educational technology. |  Prof Jen Snowball

Professor Peter Vale |
| Professor Peter Vale holds the Nelson Mandela Chair of Politics at Rhodes University. His experience of higher education includes acting as Vice Rector, Academic Affairs at the University of the Western Cape from 1999 to 2001. One of his most recent publications explores the role of the Humanities in South African higher education. Professor Vale is also interested in issues related to academic freedom and managerialism. |  Prof Peter Vale

Professor Sioux Mckenna |
| Professor Sioux McKenna has recently joined Rhodes University as coordinator of this Doctoral Programme. She has a PhD which looks at academic literacy in higher education and has a number of publications in the area of access to higher education and quality management of higher education. |  Prof Sioux McKenna
