Assessors' Course
Accreditation of Assessors in Higher Education
Rhodes University's official policy on the Assessment of Student Learning is that it is a condition of service that all new staff undertake formal training in the assessment of student learning. CHERTL offers a course designed to develop/enhance lecturers' competence in the assessment of student learning in the higher education context. Successful completion of the course results in the award of a formal qualification accredited against two unit standards on the NQF.
What does the course involve?
The process of becoming accredited as an assessor concerns learning how to promote more effective assessment and how to use assessment to improve the quality of student learning. Lecturers' own professional practice and experience are drawn on as key resources for the course, which is predicated on the understanding that the principle motivation of lecturers' to take part in professional development is that the effort involved should result in practical value as well as insight. In the case of the Assessors Course this means the major goal is to make lecturers' assessment more effective, to strengthen lecturers' assessment practice.
