Abstract: Rivers, Our Connected Waters

Rivers connect waters and lands, and they also connect people. My research focuses on understanding connections, and disconnections related to rivers, and how humans have modified natural patterns and processes in recent decades. I will discuss river connectivity, highlight our connections with rivers, and present an overview of my research and community-based initiatives aimed at raising awareness about connections and disconnections of our world’s rivers.

Stephanie Januchowski-Hartley is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Laboratoire Evolution et Diversité Biologique, Université Paul Sabatier, France where she is evaluating impacts of dams, weirs and roads on freshwater fish distribution and community composition. She is motivated to solve pressing global conservation problems, and as a dedicated researcher and educator she has travelled the world working to improve our understanding about freshwater ecosystems, and relationships between humans and nature. Stephanie communicates and shares stories about science, conservation and nature through diverse mediums including poetry, art, and blogging
