Rhodes gives staff an opportunity to improve their qualificationsDate Released: Tue, 8 August 2017 15:35 +0200
Rhodes University has a number of staff members without matric certificates. However, this is set to change with the introduction of a programme through which staff can obtain this qualification.
In partnership with the Department of Higher Education (DHET) and Training and Makana municipality, the University will from September this year, offer staff members an opportunity to participate in this free matric programme.
“Regardless of whether a staffer has Grade 11 or their age, everyone is welcome to apply,” said Schalk van der Merwe, Organisational Development Specialist at Rhodes University.
The applications, which are already open, will close on Friday, 11 August 2017. Once all the applications have been received, a final class schedule and subjects will be proposed.
An initiative by the DHET, the programme will provide qualified and approved teachers who have been trained to teach matric subjects to citizens of any age and background for participants.
This programme will replace a similar Rhodes University programme takes that has been running for the past six years utilising private institutions and teachers from the local schools.
“We are excited and are hoping staff will enrol with the possibility of studying further and improving their work grades,” said van der Merwe.
The nine-month programme will start next month and the final examinations will take place in mid-2018.
Application forms are available from Human Resources, room 209 at the main Administration building.
