Date Released: Thu, 11 May 2017 08:44 +0200

We celebrated the partnership at the RU Sports Bar which included stakeholders: HKE staff, Makana Municipality, Rhodes student volunteers, CE office, Sakulutsha staff and soccer teams.  Rhodes Student Volunteers were thanked for their dedication and commitment to the partnership.

The purpose of the Soccer Research Group is to understand, through scientific investigation and community engagement, how to provide equity of opportunity to all South Africans to structured physical activity programs, with a focus initially on soccer in Urban poor communities in the Makana region of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The purpose of the soccer research group is, therefore, twofold: To understand how to identify and develop urban poor talent (including a systems analysis of how to create pathways for vertical migration to professionalism) and secondly to provide a platform for the enrichment of the lives of local urban poor soccer players. This program should focus not only on their physical wellness but also provide opportunities for cognitive development and leadership

Within this context, the HKE Soccer Research Group has over the past two years developed a working relationship with the Sakhulutsha soccer development academy. The academy has a focus on identifying and developing young soccer talent in Joza township and the department has been actively involved in supporting the initiative through provision of strength and conditioning services and administrative support. Through this alliance the senior squad (under18) has progressed from playing in the local league into the South African Football Association SAB regional league, this is an impressive achievement considering that this league is the feeder for the second division professional league of SAFA.
