We celebrated World Read Aloud Day today! This morning we read to over 100 children.
This initiative aims to read aloud to 1 million children!
"78% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning in any language" - Progress In International Reading Literacy, 2016.
Reading aloud to a child is one of the most important things a parent and caregiver can do with children. Not only does it build a strong language foundation, it introduces vocabulary and can help develop empathy, curiosity and critical thinking. On this day we all have a responsibility to spread the importance and power of reading aloud and sharing stories with children.
Our Residence CE Reps, during their training travelled to Siyazama Pre-school to read with about 50 children.
Also celebrating were Rhodes staff members, Dukashe Phumezo and Thandie Mgqobele who are Intsomi Reading Programme Vangaurds. Their programme runs at Raglan Road Day Care.
Thanks to everybody was part of a great morning of literacy in our town!
