Awards 2009
The prestigious 2009 Student Volunteer & Community Engagement Awards were held at Eden Grove on the 30th of October 2009. The evening provided a platform to give thanks to the community partners who had accommodated Rhodes University students during the course of the year and to acknowledge students and student bodies that gave selflessly of their time, skills and energy to make a difference in the community.
The guest speaker for the evening was Dr Mabizela who inspired all present with his rendition of "Be bright in the corner where you are" and the incredible GADRA Marimba Drum Band, originally started by a student volunteer, provided the entertainment for the night.
Over 300 Rhodes University students, ranging from 1st years to post-graduates, received recognition for their volunteering activities and special awards were presented to those who had gone over and beyond the call of duty:
Hall of the Year: Lillian Ngoyi Hall
Resident of the Year: Dingemans House
Society of the Year: RUPSA
Sports Club of the Year: RU Chess
Community Engagement Rep of the Year: Kiaran Gillies
Volunteer of the Year Finalists: Shakira Maharaj, Clive Eley and Hazel Makoena
Special recognition Award; Christopher Kemp
Student Volunteer of the Year: Michelle Knights - for her work at St Mary's Aftercare Centre and, Luyanda Shosha - for her work with the Nyaluza Feeding Scheme

This year the Volunteer of the Year award was shared between Michelle Knights and Luyanda Soshla
