On Saturday, 25 May, the International Office and the SRC held its second International Day. International societies at Rhodes participated, giving us a little taste of the wide cultural diversity at Rhodes.

The day opened with music from local Marimba band, which immediately created a festive mood and got people dancing. The societies had prepared local food, put up displays about their homes and some were even playing videos about home. Visitors could choose from croissants and mopane worms, jollof rice and swazi stew! And for those that were inspired to travel, a quick stop at the International Office's Exchange Fair could give them all the information they needed about studying abroad!

We were entertained with a quiz and info talk by the French society, and the students who participated in the Chinese Bridge competition in April delighted us with their winning performances (not that we understood what they were saying!). Amnesty International used the opportunity to raise awareness and get people to write letters at the their letter writing booth.

Just before the afternoon ended, the final awards for the day were given out. Congratulations to:

  • BotSoc for the Best Stall
  • The Chinese stall for the Best Performance
  • Swazi Soc for having the best dressed members!

The mbira band rounded off a pleasant afternoon, with their relaxed vibe. In the end, the afternoon was a great success, and we look forward to doing this again next year!
