Ma Yue - Professor/Lecturer/Head of Subject

Doctor Ma Yue has been seconded from Jinan University, situated in Guangzhou, Guangdong, PRC. In 1994, he was awarded the title of “Guangdong’s New Elite in Education” by the Guangdong Department of Higher Education. He then went on to obtain his PhD in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in 1999 from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He has been teaching English and Chinese as second languages for thirty years, and led an expert team to re-introduce the teaching of Chinese in Indonesia, which had been illegal for thirty-five years. He is now the subject head and professor of Chinese Studies, as well as the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University.

Zheng Bi Lian

Zheng Bi Lian holds a Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MSTCSOL). She has experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at Misamis Union High School in the Philippines, teaching Chinese to the staff of foreign companies in China, and offering Chinese lessons during Summer Chinese School at Jinan University. She currently forms part of the CIRU and teaches Chinese to students at the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG).

Professor Marius Vermaak is the Dean of the International Office and a lecturer in the Philosophy department at Rhodes University.
