The Rhodes Counselling Centre
At the Rhodes Counselling Centre we offer shelter and protection to all kinds of trees, exposed to many types of adverse weather conditions….
Sometimes trees have been blown about in thunderstorms, had their branches broken off, or been struck by lightning. And then they need help to examine the injury caused by storm damage and to gather remaining resources. At other times, the trees need to be pruned or to have their dead branches and leaves blown away by winds of clarity and challenge.
When there is drought trees suffer. They need assistance to send their roots even deeper into the earth to draw sustenance during times of crisis and shortage. And to clarify what type of nurturing and support would help relieve the draught. Or to develop strategies to survive until the rain comes.
Sometimes trees are bent double by gale force winds. They have lost the wider view they usually have when they tower above everything else. We can help to put in place temporary support and struts, until they stand up straight again and regain their perspective.
We can also explore what grows on the ground below the trees, sheltered from harsh weather conditions and protected by shade….and understand how these plants and flowers might be depleting the earth below the tree, sucking up water and nutrients that would otherwise be nourishing the tree.
At the Rhodes Counselling Centre our aim is to cultivate a forest of strong and robust trees on campus, each one reaching up into the sky towards its potential in its own unique way, whatever the type of tree.
To this end we offer a range of confidential services:
Group therapy for students with similar interests and goals
Workshops on academic issues, such as time management, stress management and exam preparation
- Individual counselling
- Career assessments
- Self-help material and information pamphlets covering various topics
- An after-hours crisis line for psychological emergencies
- Provision of referral information (if we are unable to help you, we can tell you about other services that may be able to help)
- If you have recently weathered a storm, or noticed that your branches are beginning to droop a little, please pay us a visit. We look forward to working with you to restore your well-being.
The Counselling Centre is on the top floor of the Bantu Steven Biko Building. Our services are available on weekdays, from 8h00 to 17h00. We welcome trees of all shapes and sizes, and in all conditions.
Help us to create a flourishing forest on campus!
