Painting the hall for the Hospice

Courtenay-Latimer Hall is happily involved in several community projects. The students have regular fundraising efforts, then use the money to support needy groups in our community.

We have an ongoing involvement with the Hospice children's support group: Students have enjoyed getting to know this group; they painted the community hall in which the support group meets, contribute to their lunches, and hold picnic and games days for the children. They have held a 'Careers talk afternoon' and a Fun Day with these children.

Although it rained on the day that a picnic was arranged for the young folk in the botanical gardens, the party reverted to the Beit common room where the children and students had a lively funfilled time eating lunch together and playing dancing games.

A computer workshop followed the games; the children were helped by student buddies through a series of familiarisation exercises on computers in the Jacaranda Laboratory.

In previous years money raised by the students has gone towards toiletry gifts for patients in palliative care and the Barratt wing of Settlers' Hospital, giving care parcels to teenagers with HIV/Aids, and contributing food items to the Sinako pre-primary school in Bathurst. Money raised by Courtenay-Latimer Hall students was donated to the Give 5 campaign to assist school children in the Grahamstown community; presents were bought for the Child Welfare Christmas party; the SPCA and Red Cross have also been beneficiaries of our annual car wash.

Many of the Courtenay-Latimer Hall Students sign up for other Social Development projects and contribute to a wide range of activities.
