ECD Courses
The Centre for Social Development (CSD) at Rhodes University offers a number of part time courses in Early Childhood Development and Community Development. These involve students attending contact sessions in the CSD training venue, and completing practical work and assignments. CSD Training facilitators visit students in their places of work, for support and monitoring. As a Public Benefit Organisation, the CSD is a donor-funded, so costs for the courses are kept low – even though students receive lunch whilst attending the contact sessions. Training is done in small classes of 20 to 30 students
The CSD is accredited with the ETDP SETA and the courses we offer have been through the rigorous programme approval process. Qualifications are made up of Unit Standards according to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). While short courses are based on one or two unit standards, the full qualifications cover a number of different unit standards.
ECD qualifications provide the skills and knowledge for practitioners to prepare stimulating activities and care for young children, and for managing a pre-school.
The Level 6 BEd Foundation Phase degree, offered in collaboration with the Rhodes University Education Department provides further theory and practical and philosophical insights for teaching up to Grade 3. Presently this qualification is only offered at Rhodes University and the CSD.
