DADS' WORKSHOPS
An article on our first Dads' Workshop held in 2010. A second workshop has since been held in Bathurst.

Parents have joint responsibility for raising the child, and the State shall support them in this. The best interests of the child will be their basic concern
-The Convention on the Rights of the Child
For the first time in the almost-thirty years of its existence, the CSD specifically focussed on fathers in a two day workshop held at the Raglan Road Multi-purpose Community Centre. Fathers of children at the pre-schools nearby were invited to take part in a programme designed around teaching the dads more about their roles and responsibilities. It wasn’t all hard work though, and the workshop started with a drama and discussion on being involved in children’s education. The dads learnt about the importance of playing with their children and took a tour of the Raglan Road pre-school to see exactly what their children do there. Toys and games from the CSD’s Toy Library were produced and the dads played with them. Later, they watched a DVD on conflict management with children. To end with, they made a toy to take home to play with their children – but first had lots of fun racing their cotton-reel racers against each other! Afterwards, one of the dads remarked: “I have a new definition of a man”.

RESOURCE-MAKING WORKSHOPS
The CSD was asked by the Department of Education to host a workshop for 10 preschool teachers from Grahamstown. The focus of the workshop was on how to make your own resources. Some of the teachers had never been to a workshop of this kind before and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
During the workshop the teachers learnt how to make effective posters. Discussions were held on the benefits of posters and how to get the most out of them. Discussions also included the importance of using the preprimary font.
With soccer fever in the air, teachers were also taught how to make a variety of soccer games. One of the games can be seen in the photo alongside.
The teachers also made story aids and discussed the best way to use these aids. The final resource that was made were numeracy and literacy flash cards. It was a great day for all involved!
