From Zinzi's blog... Scikidz 2011 comes to a close

This year’s Scikidz came to a close on Tuesday, 10 May 2011 at Noluthando Hall. It was a busy and tiresome week but worth all the fun. What felt like a never-ending mission when it came to packing up and cleaning the “educational mess” made by the young minds felt like it had all been worth the trouble when they waved or hugged us before they left.
The decision to take the event to the townships was not taken lightly as it came to our attention that many children had to pay taxi fares to get to the event in town. And those that did not have the money would be left behind at school or told to stay at home while other children went to the event. CSD wanted Scikidz to be a short walk away from these children’s schools. As a result we had to accommodate much larger numbers than the usual 150 children per session. The many children that came to see what was in store for them made the whole event into a success because they never stopped asking questions, touching and exploring. For many of them, toys are a luxury and seeing them in abundance was a lot of fun and chance to indulge in things they were not familiar with at school and at home.
It was a lot of hard work in a very short space of time to try and organise an event this big. It was even bigger than we had hoped. It was heart-warming for me to see the staff of CSD pull together and give up half their working days to lend a hand at the event. It has been a pleasure and an honour to find myself working with such giving individuals who do not mind going the extra mile for the benefit of children. We look forward to organising an even bigger and better Scikidz next year!
