The Dean of Students office urges all students to take good care in terms of prevention of petty crime such a theft of cellphones and
other personal items. The Head of Grahamstown Police indicated to the university authorities that a large amount of these types of crimes happen through pure negligence and would be preventable through basic vigilance. Please make a habit of keeping your belonging secured.
There also has been a high incidence of arrests of student for shoplifting. In most cases students perform these acts simply as a prank. The consequences of this can be far-reaching for your future where for instance you may be barred from registering for a certain profession or you may be denied an international travel visa due to a criminal record. With Women's Week coming up we wanted to find a way to get the guys involved and we realised that since Rhodes men are making huge strides to be part of the solution to the inequalities of our society we should celebrate that. We have found a way for men to publically take a stand against violence and for justice and equality and this is how you can get involved this Thursday (02 August):
• wear your purple Silent protest shirt
• sign a pledge against sexual violence
• bring along an old sock (you know the washing machine always eats one so we all have a few mismatched ones lying around), write your name on it and peg it to one of the 'life' lines we will have in the library quad. We want to fill these lines as a way to symbolise the strides we are making towards justice for our mothers, sisters, partners and friends
As always, there will be cupcakes up for grabs so please come along, step up for equality on Rhodes campus, get rid of the lonely socks in your cupboard and maybe score an awesome cupcake :)

Your SRC, the Purple Thursday Team, GAP and the Dean of Students Division

Members of Rhodes University will be aware that Ms Lelona Thembakazi Fufu was murdered while hitching from Port Elizabeth to Grahamstown for her graduation on Thursday 12 April this year. Ms Fufu had come through the Science Foundation Programme to complete a BSc in mathematics and mathematical statistics and in 2011, a joint Honours in mathematics and mathematical statistics. The University has decided that a memorial prize in her name would be an appropriate way to remember her and what she brought to the life of the University and her residence.
The Lelona Thembakazi Fufu Memorial Prize will be awarded annually at Graduation to a student graduating in science with a BSc or BSc (Hons) who has overcome educational hardships to achieve very good results. Preference will be given for a student who has come through the Foundation Programme and who has majored in the mathematical or statistical sciences. Where there are suitable recipients at both BSc and BSc (Hons) levels, two awards may be made.

Dear Students
As Rhodes University has expanded in size over the years, the road system on Campus has become increasingly congested, with a limited amount of parking space available. Unfortunately there will be even more pressure on parking from June this year, when the building of a new Education Building will begin in the Grey St parking lot (near Allan Webb Hall). The site will be accessible to construction staff only, with no through route. After completion, there will only be limited parking for disabled and staff.
Students are reminded that that there are 240 parking bays in the Barratt Car Park (with 24/7 security), within a 10 minute easy walk to most parts of campus. Also note that all restricted areas such as Central Campus and St Peters Campus are open after-hours for staff and students.
Your understanding and patience will be appreciated.

THE PEDRO ISSUE
At the beginning of the year, former SRC Treasurer Mr. Pedro Mzileni had updated his Facebook status with an offensive post implicating the Dean of Students. The SRC released a press statement distancing itself from the status update given its non-affiliation with the Facebook post and by extension, the former councillor. This saw criticism by members of the Student Body and questioned the SRC?s stance regarding forms of discrimination.
The SRC acknowledges the approach used and further extends its apologies to students that felt offended by the statement released.
The SRC wishes to re-affirm its stance fervently against racism and all other forms of discrimination listed under Section 9 of the constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

Dear Students
The examinations are almost upon us, and I’d like to remind everyone, especially first-years, of the basic rules, so that you are well-prepared. You can read the full version at http://www.scifac.ru.ac.za/examtime.htm
Seating plans: each student is allocated a specific seat, and a seating plan is placed just outside the entrance of the exam venue.
Punctuality: Doors are locked 10 minutes before the session - i.e. at 8:20 and at 1:50, and you must be seated in your allocated
place before lock-up time. Because of last-minute crowding, allow yourself some extra time to find your seat. If you find the doors have been locked by the time you arrive, don't panic: the doors will be re-opened when the papers have been distributed. If you are very late, don’t panic either: you will be admitted to the venue up to one hour after the start of the session, but you WILL NOT get
additional time to compensate for your late start.
Attendance forms: at each exam you must complete an attendance form which will be collected by the invigilator shortly after the exam has started.

Africa is often viewed, by its inhabitants and outsiders alike, as something of a basket case. What is rarely discussed are the things that make Africa relevant, the things that make the world a better place for having Africa and it’s people in it, the things that have inspired Africa and the Africa that inspires the world. This is about to change.
Rhodes University is getting involved with ‘ideas worth spreading’ this year with its inaugural TEDx event scheduled for August. Four of the speakers for the event have already been announced and applications to attend are pouring in!

According to the family, Ms Fufu's death was confirmed by the police on Friday afternoon. She was last seen on Thursday at about 14h00 when she left her home in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, to hitchhike to Grahamstown, where she was to prepare for the Thursday evening graduation ceremony.
The family, who had arranged to travel to Grahamstown later in the afternoon lost contact with her after 14h30, and reported her missing to the police after 19h00 on Thursday following a fruitless search. The University extends sympathy to her family and friends.

MEDIA CAREERS FOR GRAD STUDENTS
Graduating from at the end of 2011? Not sure about your choices?
Combine your degree (anything from Accounting to Zoology) with a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies to fast-track your media career.
A minimum of a good pass in a 'non-journalism' undergraduate degree is your first step to a professional career in newspapers, magazines, online or even television and radio.
We offer a practical programme that enables students to generate news and features across a wide variety of platforms and fields of interests such as science, politics, health, business, and art. Learn the finer points of news reporting, digital photography and online journalism as you debate ethical challenges and deliberate on the changing nature and roles of journalism in society. The School has partnered with Grocott's Mail and other media which means all students graduate with a published portfolio to land that dream job.
You can use what you learn on this programme in other areas of media and communications - such as research, editing, marketing and public relations.
To find out about the Post Graduate Diploma: Journalism and Media Studies course, visit the African Media Matrix (Upper Prince Alfred Road) at 13h00 on 21 September. Enjoy free pizza and chat about our course and the possibility of a career in journalism and communications.

This Saturday will be Legal Activisms finale event of the year – the Constitutional Awareness Drive.
We will be transporting students into various parts of the Grahamstown East community where we will hand out copies of the Bill of Rights and talk to people broadly about the Constitution as well as the legal problems that people are facing.
This process is as much about promoting awareness about the Constitution and the law as it is an opportunity for our members and Rhodes students to get some valuable experience in presenting the law as well as learning about the community in which we live. We encourage all of you to get involved since, if last year is anything to go by, it will be a great experience for everyone.
