I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Roger Adams as the new Deputy Dean of Students from 20 June 2011.
Mr. Adams has worked in student affairs through the area of sport at three different universities over the course of 21 years. His approach to student services is grounded in student development and empowerment and he has applied this effectively over the last three years in his capacity as Manager of Sports Administration. In particular Mr Adams oversaw the establishment of a student governance structure which is arguably one of the most progressive in terms of student engagement at any university in the country. The new structure saw unprecedented engagement between the Student Sports Council and the SRC around issues of university-wide importance such as Intervarsity.
Working with student leaders has been a core focus for Mr Adams who himself has held numerous leadership positions in various national student sports structures since 1993. His interest in broader university affairs reflects in various other involvements such as his chairpersonship of the Equity and Transformation Forum of the Department of Student Affairs at UCT, where he led the design of that department’s equity plan. He was also chairperson of the UCT Black Staff Association for a number of years, in which capacity he was involved in various institutional issues pertaining to students and staff. Mr Adams worked as a part-time lecturer at the University of the Western Cape and Varsity College over a period of four years. His experience of student life has been enhanced further through him serving as Warden of Smuts House for the past two years. We wish him every success in his new position.
