On 1 August 2011 Rhodes Music Radio (RMR) turns 30 years old- once making history as the oldest campus-based community station in the country. To celebrate the station has declared August, it’s birthday month, to be one long Birthday Bash! The station’s management has been hard at work preparing a series of surprises that will keep the campus and the community on the lookout for the next one.
Among the surprises in store for listeners is the new line-up that launches August 01 with the RMR Breakfast Show from 7-9am, new show teams and longer 3 hour shows from 9am to midnight daily. The fun was kick-started in the final week of July with a number of well known Grahamstown and Rhodes University personalities taking over the airwaves. Some of the personalities were Dean of Students, Dr De Klerk, hosting Breakfast with Grahamstown’s very own Father Time(Dr Sirion Roberstson), SRC President Alan Magubane, locals djs Con-artist and Monks, student leaders Athambile Masola and Jacob Phamodi and RMR alumni, Noizee.
According to Marketing Brands Manager, Ms Babalwa Nyembezi, the take-over was well received by listeners and drew a great deal of attention across the community. Nyembezi went on to add that the past week was only a “taste” of all the variety RMR has catered for in its line-up.
The RMR birthday month activities include events at Equilibruim, House of Pirates and Slipstream Sportsbar, lunch-time jams on Rhodes campus and prize giveaways on-air. The station is looking to take Grahamstown by storm and engage with as many of it’s 12 000 listeners.
Rhodes Music Radio was the first campus radio station to be licensed in South Africa, breaking the SABC monopoly on radio, and as such the station is looking forward to honouring those who established the station by truly celebrating the success of the 30 year old establishment. Many well-known South African media personalities, such as 5FM DJs Nicole Fox, Rob Vember, Jola Slokowski , Mlu Dlukulu (Metrofm), Jeremy Mansfield (formerly of Highveld Stereo), Nick Grubb (former 5fm programming Manager), David O’ Sullivan (702), Siki Mgabadeli, Tapfuma Makina (HeartFm 104.9) had their careers launched over RMR’s airwaves.
