Welcome New Students
Welcome to Dingemans House
Future ladies of Dingemans House are welcomed by their Warden, Tracey Chambers, the sub-wardens, Head Student and House Committee.
Congratulations on being accepted into Rhodes University and a big welcome to Dingemans House.
I can assure you that you will soon feel very much at home in your new environment. The House Committee will be here when you arrive for O-week and introduce you to the Rhodes culture and environment. Their main responsibility is to ensure that you are made to feel comfortable and safe and that no time is occupied with ideas of home-sickness. They will offer you a homely and supportive environment so that your parents and you have peace of mind as you make the transition from school and home to our beautiful campus.
All girls in Dingemans have their own rooms, each equipped with a hand basin. A bathroom, shower and toilets are shared by eight girls.
About your new home - Dingemans is situated very near to the main campus. It is near the library, computer laboratories, Steve Biko Union buildings (the swimming pool can be found here), Campus Protection is right on our doorstep, the Sanatorium and Eden Grove.
The first thing you will do when you arrive is REGISTER at Eden Grove. Once you have your admission papers, you can proceed to Dingemans where the House Comm members will be waiting to welcome you. Bring your folks with you, they will be anxious to see where you will be living, they can meet the Warden and fill her in on anything she needs to know regarding medication you're on and get piece of mind that you are going to be in good hands!!
Once you bid farewell to the folks, it’s time to get down to serious business – Orientation Week! If you remember anything once you graduate, it’s going to be your orientation week. This is seven days when you are given great opportunities to meet your fellow first years and attend exciting social events. You also get to sit in on introductory lectures, which really help when it comes down to making your subject choices at the end of the week. This is also a great time to explore the campus and get to know Rhodes, Grahamstown, your House Comm and Warden who resides in the residence and is there if you need anything.
All this can be very overwhelming, but never fear when the House Committee is at hand! We are here to answer any questions, problems or issues that you may have and are right there to make your Rhodes experience as pain free as possible. Our contact details will be given to you when you arrive and our doors will always be open for you.
See you soon fellow Rhodent.
Love,
Camilla Paiva
