Celeste House
House Committee
The house committee consists of seven portfolio positions, all of which aim to encourage interaction, active participation and integration into residence and university life. The portfolios include: Head-student, Food/Entertainment Rep, Community Engagement Rep, Sports Rep, Treasurer/Secretary, Resnet Rep. Social functions, like barbecues, or “braais”, as South Africans call it, held at least once a term, bring together the residents of the house and promote intermingling and harmony within the house.
I am the head student of Celeste House. I oversee all social activities relating to the house. With the help, support and commitment of house comm, I am responsible for creating a wholly pleasant and enjoyable experience for the residents of Celeste. I coordinate the planning and organising of termly social events for the house and am responsible for delegating duties and responsibilities to house comm in order to make these events a success. I also make sure house comm members have the necessary support they need in order to fulfil their portfolio duties. With the help and support of house comm, I am responsible for discussing planned social events with residents of the house and for listening to their needs and concerns so that all residents feel content; that their needs and concerns are listened to and acted upon.
I am the Secretary/Treasurer for Celeste House. My basic responsibilities are that I take care of minutes from House Committee meetings and distribute them to all members of the house. I am also responsible for reconciling the house net income with our gross habits (lol)… On a serious note, I review funds at every House Committee Meeting, advising to committee of income and possible budget shortfalls. I also liaise with the Entertainment and Sports Rep and collect all receipts from them within one week of the event. Lastly, I am required to draw up a quarterly financial record of house income and expenditures. A quarterly audit is then performed of all the transactions by the hall and then an audit at the end of the year by external auditors.
The Celeste Residence Entertainment and Food Representative is required to attend a mandatory meeting each term to discuss dining hall issues and meal plan concerns with the Drostdy Hall catering staff. In addition, it is the responsibility of the Food and Entertainment Representative to assist with the organization and planning of all resident and hall events. As Food/Entertainment Rep, you are also responsible for ensuring that all registers for hall/residence/and catered events are filled out and signed by Celeste students. The Food/Entertainment Rep position is a great way to be involved on campus, make friends, and assist in the planning of some of the year's greatest residence events!
