ACE TE
Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) in Technology (TE)
The ACE in Technology Education, is a two-year part-time course for teachers in the GET band who have a recognised three-year teaching diploma. The sessions are held during parts of the school holidays and on occasional weekends. It is currently offered at Grahamstown and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Ideally, applicants will have a flair for creativity and some practical problem-solving ability. No formal subject qualification is required.
Technology Education is a new learning area in South Africa. Consequently there is a large demand for qualified teachers equipped to teach this learning area.
What is Technology Education?
Technology Education (also known as "Design & Technology" in some countries), helps prepare young people for living and working in a technological world. It does this by teaching the technical understanding, design methods and making skills needed to produce practical solutions to real problems. It stimulates both intellectual and creative abilities and develops the personal qualities needed to complete a design project from initial idea to a finished product.
The ACE(TE) will comprise the following modules:
First Year:
• Technology I
• Maths and Science Literacy
• Teaching and Learning
Second Year:
• Technology II
• Science
• Mathematics
• The Education Environment
The technology components will include, amongst others, the following topics: an introduction to technology and the technological process, materials and processing, structures, mechanisms, energy and power, and information and communication technology.
The Mathematics and Science components of the course are practical rather than theoretical in nature and are designed to complement the Technology components.
A key feature of the course is the development of skills and competencies of the learners through practical, activity-based tasks and projects.
