Though Ashley has a firm footing in academics, his present work explores realms beyond scholarship. He holds a prestigious Ashakoa Fellowship, a non-academic fellowship which supports entrepreneurs throughout the world to pursue creative solutions for social change. His work focuses on rural development in the northern Keiskammahoek in the former Ciskei. Working from the ELRC allows Ashley to collaborate with colleagues and students across disciplines, both at Rhodes' campus and beyond. Ashley’s research expresses his passion for rural development, human rights, restitution and land reform and the production of historical truth.
