Injairu is combining arts with social and environmental activism to empower Grahamstown locals. She is teaming with the Arkwork Collective, an arts-based NGO that encourages local underprivileged young adults to grapple with issues they face in their communities – from HIV/Aids to poverty and other affronts to livelihood. Injairu’s background in Political Studies created an awareness of the need for human development that is both historically conscious and participatory. The collective uses performance art as a platform for young adults to explore creative possibilities for adaptation and building resilience. In this, they are challenged to utilise recycled and discarded materials to make their costumes and props. This year will be their second time performing at the National Arts Festival, where the drama will unfold around a car built entirely from recycled materials.
