Handprint Actions
Handprint Actions for Sustainability Learning Commons
Learning how to develop and adopt positive actions for change towards a more sustainable future is the focus of this Sustainability Commons Learning Project. Instead of worrying too much about our ecological footprints, the idea of ‘handprints for change’ is to encourage positive actions for change. This Sustainability Commons Learning Project involves participating in learning activities such as:
• Recycling, re-using, and creatively re-imagining waste as a useful resource
• Cooking nutritious food using traditional recipes and methods
• Re-using and filtering grey water
• Sustainably harvesting natural resources such as honey a
• Worm farming
• Making compost for growing organic vegetables in tower gardens
Key partners in this Sustainability Commons Learning Network include (amongst others): the Rhodes University Environmental Learning Research Centre, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), Share-Net and the Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) in India. Local partners such as the Rhodes University Biotechnology Unit, Makana Meadery, and the Umthathi Training Project, also contribute knowledge and experience to Handprints for Change. Eco-Schools teachers use Handprints for Change materials and ideas to strengthen Eco-Schools learning. This Sustainability Commons Learning Project is a project of the Makana Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development.
