Healthy Living Learning Commons
Supporting communities to learn healthy living practices is the focus of this Sustainability Commons Learning Project. This project works closely with community learning facilitators that work in NGOs and CBOs, training them and sharing knowledge and experience about community learning facilitation at a grassroots level. It involves participating in learning activities such as:
• Conducting asset based assessments to find out what strengths exist in communities for healthy living practices
• Participating in agri-planning to plan for annual food production and planting
• Growing organic food for maximum nutrition
• Cooking to preserve nutrition and maintain a healthy lifestyle
• Serving and eating a balanced meal
• Providing supportive care for those with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses
• Using medicinal plants in sustainable ways
• Reducing over-consumption of harmful substances and unhealthy foods
Key partners in this Sustainability Commons Learning Network are the Rhodes University Environmental Learning Research Centre, the Umthathi Training Project and Africulture Centre, the Rhodes University Pharmacy Department, and the Departments of Health and Agriculture. The project also involves several NGOs such as DELTA, the Catholic Diocese in Umthata, and the Keiskamma Art Project. This Sustainability Commons Learning Project is a project of the Makana Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development.
