The animal cell
Animals cells are eukaryotic cells, which means that they have a nucleus that is surrounded by a nuclear membrane. Animals cells vary in shape and in their cytoplasmic contents making it difficult to provide an image of a "typical" animal cell. Nevertheless the images here show many of the features of animal cells.
Both the images below are sections through cells photographed with a transmission electron microscope.
| This is a kidney cell which has a nucleus that is about 5 micrometers in diameter.

| These are ciliated epithelial cells. Note the basal nucleus that is about 3 micrometers across. | ![]() |
