The above image is a section through a nucleus from a liver cell. The nucleus is about 5µm in diameter. The nucleus (N) contains chromatin, which consists of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and protein. Also visible is the nucleolus (No) which contains ribonucleic acid (RNA). The nucleus is bounded by two membranes that form the nuclear envelope. Outside the nucleus other cell organelles are visible, notably mitochondria (m) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (rer).
