The undergraduate programme is structured according to a number of different themes which are developed every year. You can view the curriculum by clicking on the image below (Click twice for an enlarged version).

Undergraduate linguistics curriculum
One set of themes are broadly general linguistics (syntax, morphology, phonetics, semantics etc) while the other set of themes are broadly applied linguistics and text linguistics (sociolinguistics, systemic functional linguistics, text and discourse analysis etc).
The object of courses in English Language and linguistics is to develop students' understandings of language systems and behaviour in the context of human communication and society. We ask questions like: How does language work as a system? What is language and how does it work? What do different languages have in common? How do we use language to do various things?
It is generally a good idea to consider doing a 4-year degree as overseas universities generally only recognize a 4-year degree. A 3-year degree may limit your options for further study. During Honours (4th year) these themes are consolidated with modules relating to the research interests of the staff. A sample of these are listed in the graphic.
