Professional Communication for Commerce Students
This one-semester course is for Commerce students who are at least in their 3rd academic year.
Aims
The course aims to improve the oral, written and small-group communication skills required in the professional and commercial world. Emphasis lies on the student's ability to use language effectively rather than on theoretical knowledge.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Knowledge
By the end of the course, students should demonstrate an understanding of:
- a model of communication, showing its main components
- the functions of language, and the effect of context on appropriacy
- the differences between spoken and written communication
- how to structure information for different audiences and purposes
- the importance of purpose and audience on style and tone
- meaning relations and the effects of vocabulary choices
- how gender and cultural differences affect communication
- how to utilise visual aids in communication
- procedures involved in interviews and formal meetings
Skills
By the end of the course, students should demonstrate an ability to:
- write correct formal English, and be able to identify and correct errors
- critically compare texts in terms of whether they achieve their purposes
- identify a range of styles and tones, and explain how they are achieved
- structure information in a coherent, logical and effective way, both in writing and orally
- produce a range of written texts (letters, formal reports, advertisements) to suit different aims and audiences
- utilise visual aids appropriately and effectively
- deliver an impromptu speech and a formal prepared speech effectively
- work in close cooperation with a small group in making oral and written presentations
- conduct a formal business meeting (including writing the agenda and the minutes)
- carry out a formal interview, playing the role of both interviewer and interviewee
