Rhodes University Energy Saving Guidelines
Staff, students and citizens are encouraged to follow these energy saving guidelines:
- Switch off lights when not needed / when you leave the room.
- Switch off heaters and other appliances when not needed / when you leave the room.
- Use fans instead of air conditioners (or set air con temp no lower than 22oC).
- Hang washing on the clothes line instead of using a tumble dryer.
- Report excessive heating / cooling in computer laboratories to the IT Division Public Lab Administrator (Zanele Silala x8674 / z.silala(at)ru.ac.za).
- Use CFLs (compact fluorescent lighting) to save energy (instead of incandescent light bulbs). NB: CFLS require safe disposal practices.
- Computer monitors should be set to go on standby / switch off when not in use.
- Shut down computer overnight (a computer monitor left on overnight wastes enough energy to laser print 800 pages).
- Close doors and windows and ensure they are properly sealed.
- Unplug cell phone chargers, etc, when not in use.
- Set geyser thermostat at 55oC. Install geyser blankets and insulate all external hot water pipes.
- Shower instead of bath (a shower uses one fifth of the energy of a standard bath).
- Movement sensor lamps outdoors are better than lights left on all night.
- Electric blankets use less energy than heaters.
- Not permitted in residences: bar heaters, toasters, snackwich makers, electric frying pans, immersion heaters, fridges, TV braais, hot plates, and other appliances with high electricity demand.
Grahamstown electricity tariff
Grahamstown is one of the most expensive in South Africa. The University has no control over this. There are two basic charges:
- Unit charge = 32 cents: this covers our actual use of electricity.
- Demand charge = R88 / kVA per month: payable throughout the year (based on the maximum demand in any one half hour period during the month, or 5% of the maximum recorded in a 1 year cycle - whichever is the highest).
- kVA = Kilovolt Amperes (the unit of electricity). 1 kVA is equivalent to the amount of energy used by a 1000 watt appliance over 1 hour.
- Demand is the availability of electricity at any time.
- Student residences have 2 to 4 rooms on one electric circuit, which is controlled by a circuit breaker. If the circuit is overloaded, it will trip and power will not be available until the load is reduced and the trip is re-set.
- Student budget allocation : each student has approx 1200 watts, with four rooms connected to a 20 amp (equivalent to 4800 watts) circuit breaker. This means that students needs be considerate of others when using electricity, in order to avoid circuit overloads and power-cuts.
- Peak demand hours for electricity are usually from 10h00 -14h00 and 17h30 -19h00 and on dull overcast days when many lights are left on.
