Gaian Revolutions And Social Solutions
Gaian Revolutions And Social Solutions (GRASS) is a society which serves the dual function of raising awareness on campus, and working in the community. They will be running res- and digs-greening workshops to inform people of how they can live more sustainably in their environments. Their aim is to train environmental reps, or whosoever fulfils this role, to facilitate such workshops in their residences throughout the year. They will provide all the materials and documentation needed to do so. They also aim to provide movies and documentaries which can be screened weekly in res common rooms.
GRASS is also in the process of establishing a community garden project in Joza which, over a span of two years, aims to establish the garden as a community-led project by providing training in business skills (Business Entrepreneurship Soc), AIDS workshop facilitation (Sharc), permaculture (Food and Trees for Africa) and litter-art techniques (Arkwork). This project could really use extra hands to help in the garden, and provides an opportunity for students to learn about permaculture and work with the community. and Robyn Hills of Food and Trees for Africa (FTA) and the Umthathi Project are currently running community garden projects in the township - they always appreciate extra help!
GRASS has an activism group, Green Guerrillas, that will be running various creative protests, flash-mobs, boycotts and happenings. A great way to have your say.
