Travel wise
Rhodes University staff and students are encouraged to share transport where practicable. You may want a lift to work, or to fill empty seats in your vehicle, or simply need to get from one place to another. Benefits include spending less money on travel, reduced congestion on our roads, and a much cleaner environment.
Let's travel wise
Get involved in the ACTION:
- Green Wheels: Students at Rhodes University have taken the initiative to establish a local car-sharing initiative, to make travelling to and from Grahamstown easier, cheaper and environmentally friendly. University staff and students can visit the Greenwheels website to find out how you can share travel in the same direction at the same time.
- TravelShare South Africa and Carpool South Africa: Two free online services that works as a connection point for people travelling in the same direction, throughout South Africa.
More about carbon emissions and cars
Carbon emissions: According to the Green Car Guide (UK), the average new car (e.g. VW Golf 1.6, Mini Cooper Convertible, Volvo C30, and Mercedes Benz CLC) emits 182g of carbon per kilometre. At the other end of the spectrum, a Hummer H2 may emit as much as 412g/km. Carpooling has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by one third - according to Bainbridge, who initiated Car Share SA. Carpooling is considered to be one of the easiest way to reduce CO2 emissions from cars, globally.
