ELIGIBILITY
Administrative/service and academic staff (individual and group) and students (individual and group) are eligible for nomination. The RU Environmental Awards Panel reserves the right not to issue an award where no significant achievement is deemed to be evident. Three categories will be considered for annual awards:
- Institute / department / section (within division)
- Student society / residence
- Individual (staff / student).
NOMINATION CRITERIA
Nominations should be based on the candidate's demonstrated efforts to promote sustainability through three or more of the following criteria:
- Operational protocols and/or practices that promote human and ecological health or ‘living communities’;
- Collaborative and cohesive efforts which strengthen and build community relationships;
- Leading by example;
- Evidence that these activities have been in place for 18 months or longer;
- Evidence that strategies or measures are in place to ensure continuity of these activities
The list of possible areas for consideration should not be seen as exclusive or exhaustive - these should be used as a guide only (the purpose being to accommodate different operational challenges faced by different sectors on campus):
- Practical responses to the Rhodes University Environmental Policy, for example: use of 'green' products; efficient use of resources (energy, water, etc); reduced waste generation; re-use and recycling; responsible waste disposal practices;
- Promoting general environmental awareness / an ethos of environmental learning;
- Supporting environmental projects that link university, community and municipality;
- Initiating environmentally sound practices and innovation on campus;
- Active promotion of emerging ‘green’ technologies on campus;
- Low total kilometres (conference / courses / seminars);
- Group travel (rather than individual air travel);
- Use of online materials (rather than printing).
Note: research-related scholarly activities are not considered - these receive recognition through the VC’s Research Awards.
NOMINATION DOCUMENTATION
Submit the Environmental Award Nomination Form which the Rhodes University Environmental Awards Panel will review. It should include the following:
- A brief motivation (1 or 2 pages, typed or clearly written) which includes: (i) a list of criteria considered relevant by the nominator, and (ii) short descriptions demonstrating how the nominee meets these criteria;
- Three referees (names, full addresses, telephone/fax/cell numbers and/or email addresses);
