Drama
relating to environmental sustainability
The performing arts are increasingly being used as a way to critique unsustainable practices and sensitise audiences about environmental issues. From the second year of study, students can take a specialised approach to theatre (called Applied Theatre) which addresses social issues. Students develop workshops and theatre pieces which use participatory educational strategies to address environmental issues.
The Ubom! Eastern Cape Drama Company is a project of Rhodes Drama company, and is renowned for its performances focusing on a variety of environmental issues, such as the impact of GM technology, and in 2008, the company developed a theatre piece on climate change and its impact on the Arctic and Antarctic – called Meltdown.
