Environmental Education
relating to environmental sustainability
The Environmental Learning Research Centre (ELRC), affiliated to the Department of Education at Rhodes University, has various post-graduate study opportunities for students with backgrounds in a wide variety of fields, in addition to its focus on research in environmental education. The ELRC is housed in a new building adjacent to the Makana Botanical Gardens, which has a number of innovative sustainability features. These include a raised bed for vegetable growing and seed production, a passive solar shower, a urine-diversion SANIX toilet, waste separation bins, solar pumps to recycle grey and rain water, and a watering-can-and-bucket hand-washing fountain.
Together with the Institute for Social and Economic Research, the ELRC coordinates the Makana Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) in Education for Sustainable Development. This centre forms part of a global network of RCEs initiated by the United Nations. As a growing international field, environmental education offers many exciting career opportunities, and addresses the need for leadership in education for sustainable development.
