Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology
relating to environmental sustainability
The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology addresses environmental concerns at numerous levels. Microbiology II includes courses on microorganisms of soil and water, medical and agricultural pathogens; their interrelationships, activity and impact; and nutrient cycling. Courses include practical experience in the isolation and culture of microbes, their identification and interaction with each other and the environment, and a two day field trip. Microbiology III includes courses in industrial ecology, bioremediation and applied and environmental microbiology (e.g. wastewater treatment). Honours in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology all include modules on pollution control techniques, biofuels and biosensors for environmental monitoring.
