Human rights
10 December (international)
The United Nations has been promoting and protecting human rights since the end of the Second World War, when it was resolved that human rights atrocities should never be allowed to take place again. In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, respect for human rights and human dignity "is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world".
States and interested organisations around the world are encouraged to observe 10 December as Human Rights Day. The event marks the anniversary of the UN General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. You are also encouraged to consider the responsibilities associated with human rights.
