The National Arts Festival is one of the most important events on the South African cultural calendar, and the biggest annual celebration of the arts on the African continent. There is a growing trend towards "collaborative" works that are examples of cultural synthesis. It is a significance forum for new ideas and an indicator of future trends in the arts – including 'edu-tainment' and socio-ecological commentary.
